Hawaii settles separate Menu Foods suit
Approximately 2,000 dog and cat owners in Hawaii, USA won a US$240,000 settlement in a class-action lawsuit against Menu Foods late last month. The settlement was reached on behalf of consumers who purchased contaminated petfood and also included those who had taken their pet to a veterinarian for an evaluation following the consumption of the recalled pet foods.
"The settlement is extremely significant because it’s the first settlement in the US brought on behalf of pet owners," said Honolulu attorney Tom Grande. He and attorney Emily Gardner said they pursued the litigation seperately from the US mainland to ensure recovery for Hawaiian pet owners. "In the national settlement, if there’s any money left over, there’s no guarantee that our state would get its fair share," Grande went on to say.
